NEXT- GENERATION POWER CABLES
UNSW RESEARCH
The Next-Generation Power project aims to manufacture large- scale , high-performance , lightweight power transmission lines that can carry a high current density . This project will provide cost savings for infrastructure and power grid maintenance and power saved during lost transmission . The technology was achieved by transferring graphite grains into graphene flakes using severe mechanical deformation generated by a patent- protected powder-in-tube technology .
100 INNOVATIONS AND CAPABILITIES
UNSW STARTUP
Kohodo Hydrogen Energy ’ s mission is to promote advanced hydrogen technology globally . Founded in Shenzhen in 2015 , it has since expanded to include offices across China , Australia , and Malaysia .
KOHODO HYDROGEN ENERGY
Kohodo ’ s focus is on creating cost-effective green hydrogen electrolysers and fuel cells , technologies which are crucial to the success of the hydrogen economy .
Traditional water electrolysis uses rare and expensive metals , such as platinum , as catalysts to generate hydrogen . These materials account for 50 % of production cost . Kohodo synthesises low-cost , earth-abundant catalysts to support the development of solar water-splitting systems that are more reliable , efficient , and sustainable .
The successful commercialisation of this technology could save approximately 275 terawatt-hours of power per year across China alone , which is equivalent to Australia ’ s entire annual energy consumption . A prototype has been built using UNSW ’ s world-class facilities . The final stage of the translation process is delivered at the Hangzhou Cable Co Ltd ( HCCL ) factory with 570 km of coppersheathed multifilament graphene power transmission line manufactured . A collaborative team is working on further improving its products to be market ready with four international patents granted .
> 2016 : Joint Laboratory established to mark the launch of the flagship HCCL graphene cable research project for high-throughput manufacturing .
> 2022 : The first batch of Cu alloy sheathed multifilament graphene composite power transmission line came off the HCCL production line .
> Application of water electrolysis technology to generate hydrogen on-site at efficient , stable and cheap hydrogen refueling stations .
