Community Outreach , Human Rights & Social Justice
Our commitment to social justice is apparent in many of our centres , from Scientia Professor Jane McAdam AO and the work of the Andrew and Renata Kaldor Centre for International Refugee Law delivering research to inform public policy debates and legislative reform , to local engagement and community legal service provided by the Kingsford Legal Centre ( KLC ). For over 40 years Director Emma Golledge and the KLC team have provided free advice across a variety of matters , taking on cases in areas such as domestic violence , discrimination , housing , wills and estates , employment , debt , criminal law and victims ’ compensation .
Our work holds authorities and government to account . Dr Emma Buxton-Namisnyk scrutinises state and service responses to domestic and family violence for better outcomes for victims and Dr Vicki Sentas shines a light on illegal strip searches by police . Our objective is to make an impact on contemporary issues , thinking and practice . Professor Justine Nolan , Director of the Australian Human Rights Institute , and her AHRI colleagues undertake research projects in areas including business and human rights , health and human rights , and gender justice , and provide accessible information on developments within the field .
Environmental Law

Our team of pre-eminent academics are a focal point for research and training on international and domestic environmental law , policy and governance issues . We collaborate on multi- and inter-disciplinary projects with colleagues across UNSW , other universities and continents and we have a strong and long history of working with government , industry , NGOs and communities to help address environmental issues .
The Sustainable Development Reform Hub supports the transformation of development beyond Gross Domestic Product , unlocking zero-carbon transitions , and building economies that work for people and nature . Hub activities currently span more than 20 countries including close collaboration with decision-makers across government , international institutions , local communities , and the private and non-profit sectors .
