Support of Australia ’ s First Peoples
UNSW Law & Justice has a long and proud tradition of supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples . During the tenure of our founding Dean , Professor Hal Wootten , the Faculty supported the creation of the Aboriginal Legal Service . In 1981 , we established the Indigenous Law Centre , which remains unique in Australia . Our academics continue to drive important reforms , including Professor Megan Davis ’ s leadership overseeing the Uluru Statement from the Heart in May 2017 and continues with constitutional reform .
The Faculty has graduated more than 140 Indigenous students . These graduates lead inspiring careers as lawyers , judges , public servants , activists , and community leaders . The key to the successes achieved by these students is the Faculty ’ s close collaboration with Nura Gili , UNSW ’ s Indigenous Programs Unit , and the generous philanthropic support of our donors .
Law & Technology
With legal practice and allied industries undergoing enormous structural change , UNSW Law & Justice is pioneering new approaches to innovation and technology . The UNSW Allens Hub for Technology , Law & Innovation led by Professor Lyria Bennett Moses works closely with leading law firm Allens to explore how the law and the legal system adapts to disruption . Issues include reliance on automation and data-driven decision-making in courts and tribunals and how the law can better manage threats to cyber security . The Hub involves over 50 researchers such as Associate Professor Katharine Kemp tackling data privacy and fertility apps and Dr Kayleen Manwaring on legal challenges for a cyber-physical world .
