Undergraduate Bachelor of Laws ( dual degree ) and Juris Doctor
UNSW Law Internships LAWS3555 / JURD7555 his course provides students the opportunity to work in a host organisation which undertakes advocacy or research on aspects of policy and practice relating to an area of law . The program provides formal and informal training , as well as supervised practical legal experience , in planning and implementing key aspects of research , writing , legal assistance , advocacy and related activities . Students will be critically analysing the operation of the law , policy and the legal system as part of the course .
Students will work under the supervision of a supervisor within a host organisation . Students are required to attend their host organisation for a minimum of 70 hours ( 10 days ). The range of work tasks in which the intern is involved will be determined according to the work priorities of the organisation , whilst ensuring educational outcomes are maximised for interns . Generally , it is expected that an intern ’ s duties will consist of a combination of tasks , including research , project , advocacy , administrative , editing , writing , event coordination , preparing background materials , briefing papers , liaising with other organisations and doing relevant work of a substantive nature .
Law Internships : Extended LAWS3777 / JURD7777 Further to the undergraduate and Juris doctor internship - LAWS3555 / JURD7555 UNSW Law Internships , the Law & Justice Faculty offers an extended internship for the student to undertake an in-depth applied research task or project , building upon their acquired organisational knowledge . Examples include : assisting with a law reform submission ; creating online resources ; undertaking a comparative analysis of the organisation ’ s practice outcomes . Organisations are not obliged to offer extended internships if a student requests it . The intention is for it to be mutually beneficial for organisation and student .
The project is agreed directly between the supervisor and student , completing a project plan template to be submitted for approval by the student . This internship must be undertaken concurrently with the foundational internship ( LAWS3555 / JURD7555 ) or in the following university term . The 10 days work for this internship are flexible , requiring reduced direct supervision and online asynchronous academic activities . Days , times and project timelines are negotiated between the supervisor and student . At the end of the internship , the supervisor must complete an evaluation of the intern .
Master of Laws
UNSW Law Postgraduate Internships LAWS8173 This course provides participants the opportunity to work in a partner organisation or affiliated Centre that undertakes advocacy or policy-oriented research . The course provides formal and informal online engagement at UNSW Law with supervised practical experience in the partner organisation or affiliated centre . Students will be critically analysing the operation of the law , policy and the legal system as part of the course .
Students will be allocated as an intern to a particular partner organisation or affiliated centre at the beginning of the session , and the partner organisation or centre will assign a supervisor for each intern . Students will work under the supervision of a supervisor within the partner organisation and a Law Faculty academic supervisor , who will be responsible for monitoring their academic progression throughout the session .
Interns are required to attend at their partner organisation or centre for at least the equivalent of one day each week over 10 weeks , by arrangement between the intern and the partner organisation or centre . Many students may choose to do extra days .
The range of projects in which the intern will be involved will be determined according to the project priorities of the partner organisation or affiliated centre . However , in general it is expected that an intern ’ s duties will consist of a combination of advocacy , research , project administrative work , interviewing clients , preparing legal materials editing , writing , event coordination , preparing background materials , briefing papers , liaising with other organisations and doing relevant work of a substantive nature .
Human Rights Internship Program LAWS8052 The Human Rights Internship Program offers postgraduate students the opportunity to undertake legal advocacy , practice , research and / or writing under the supervision of their host organisation ( either a UNSW host partner organisation or with an approved self-organised host organisation ) with a focus on the protection and promotion of human rights and justice initiatives . Under the supervision of a member of the partner organisation and the Faculty of Law & Justice , students will gain valuable experience in research , analysis , writing and advocacy on aspects of law , policy and / or practice relating to human rights and justice . Work tasks at the internship placement must be related to human rights and justice and / or law and policy and are to be negotiated between individual interns , partner organisations and the academic supervisor at UNSW Faculty of Law & Justice . Interns are required to undertake the equivalent of one full day each week of work at their partner organisation during the term and to complete their work in close consultation with their partner organisation . Students will also engage in reflective practice and complete assessment tasks under the supervision of their UNSW academic supervisor .
