Internships – Practical Arrangements

Law internships are unpaid . Each student is placed with the organisation for a minimum of 70 hours ( 10 days ). The internship course accounts for 6 units of credit . Ordinarily , the student will attend for one day each week during the term , in line with the normal business hours of the agency .
The Term 3 offering will usually be on an intensive two day per week basis . Requests can be made that the attendance schedule depart from the usual term offering .

Insurance

Where a student is engaged in a work-integrated learning activity , and is not employed by a partner organisation , the student will be covered by the UNSW Public Liability Policy . This policy indemnifies the student against thirdparty claims arising from any negligence , error or omission in relation to their WIL participation . The student will also be covered by the UNSW Personal Accident Policy for any injury that occurs when they are participating in the WIL activity , subject to the terms of the Policy . For further details of this please contact the Teaching Support Officer ( Experiential Learning ).
Professional Indemnity Insurance Students engaged in work-integrated learning activities are not covered by professional indemnity insurance as it is inherent that they are unqualified and participating in a supervised learning experience to facilitate development of skills for post-qualification .
Travel Insurance Students engaged in work-integrated learning activities overseas may be covered by the UNSW Travel Insurance Policy . If covered by the University policy , student should check their insurance cover before departing Australia and arrange additional travel coverage through a private insurance provider if this does not cover all of their travel needs to ensure they have adequate insurance cover while travelling .

Nature of the Work for Interns

Students should be involved in substantive legal practice , policy , advocacy education and / or community development work . Whilst students can be expected to contribute to the administrative work of the agency just as other staff are , this is not an administrative placement . It is also not an observational work experience and students should be given responsibility for tasks as far as is appropriate .
Students who are undertaking research based work should also be given the opportunity to experience a diverse range of internship experiences such as attending staff meetings , seminar presentations , planning sessions etc . Host organisation supervisors and academic supervisors should contact the Director of Experiential Learning if there are any queries about the nature of the work .
