GENEEQUAL

Working to make genetic healthcare and education inclusive , personcentred and respectful
RESEARCH GROUP
People with intellectual disability face inaccessible genetic healthcare and lack a voice in decision making about their own health as in many areas of their lives .
This is linked to poor healthcare outcomes , more common experience of trauma compared to other people , and stigma associated with intellectual disability .
The GeneEQUAL Toolkit was co-produced with people with intellectual disability and includes videos , Easy Read learning modules and key principles . The Toolkit was endorsed by NSW Health and disseminated via their Centre for Genetics Education Website .
The Toolkit has been seen by more than 2,780 visitors from 43 countries globally and profiled in national and international conferences and media .
Evaluation demonstrates that the toolkit has improved healthcare professionals ' motivation and intention to inclusive , person-centred and respectful genetic healthcare .
The GeneEQUAL team was funded to bring this work to a national level and to ensure that genetic healthcare is accessible and inclusive for all Australians with intellectual disability , including those who are Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders . This work will include co-production of guiding principles .
