Youth Indighack – Cultural ingenuity resonated and soared during the inaugural international Youth Indigihack held in August 2019 , building on the UN International Year of Indigenous Languages . Teams comprising Aboriginal , Maori and Turkish youths aged 8- 17 developed pitches for preserving and maintaining Indigenous languages using new technology .
Luke Briscoe CEO Indigilab , mobilised his local , national and global networks to develop Indigihack and the Business School was proud to contribute as advisors , facilitators and business mentors . Other mentors playing a pivotal part in the development of the teams ’ final pitches included UNSW Indigenous business and software engineering students Abbey Burke , Ariel Booth , Jaiki Pitt , Waliwan woman and AGSM MBA student Cherie Thompson , MCIC Founder Gregory Davis , and from UNSW Science Tierney Marey .
It was a profound two-way learning experience , as explained by visiting academic Jo Kitchen : “ As a mentor for the IndigiHack , I found myself learning a lot more from and being inspired by our youth . The event creates potential future pathways ... while creatively exploring technology , sustainability solutions and uncovering the power of cultural knowledge .”
Marketing Society Case Competition : End Climate Silence – A case competition held in July 2019 challenged teams to tackle the issue of addressing climate change through marketing . Teams were given a case including information about climate change , evidence from scientists , data on society ’ s awareness and responses . It revealed that while many people know climate change is real , they do not know what they can do to act to reduce or alleviate its impact . The call for entries proved very popular with 45 teams and over 200 students participating from the Business School and other faculties .
The winning idea was for e-waste management by the ‘ Omega Consulting ’ team which included team members Mathew Sulistyo , Annie Ji , Grace Wong , Kevin Surjadi . The judges preferred their focus on a simple but significantly practical way to encourage Australians to reduce their carbon footprint , with a marketing strategy centred on an entertaining series of short online videos .
