SDGs in the Re-designed Bachelor of Commerce
The re-designed
Bachelor of Commerce commenced in 2021 and a unique program feature includes a trans-disciplinary integrated first year ( IFY ). In line with PLOs 5 and 6 , development of the new IFY courses embeds ethics , corporate responsibility and sustainability considerations ( including the SDGs ).
Two of these courses :
COMM1100 : Business Decision Making ( Corporate responsibility ) and
COMM1110 : Evidence-based Problem Solving ( Ethical thinking ) were launched in Term One 2021 , and
COMM1150 : Global Business Environments ( Social and environmental sustainability ) launched in Term Two . Across 2021 , these three courses have seen total enrolments of around 4,000 .
Student feedback has been positive , particularly in relation to ethical decision making .
> “ I learnt more about the nuances of ethical decision making as well as what type of decision maker I am ... I have changed the way I solve problems as I am much more diligent in examining all the evidence and data that is proposed to me because I have learnt that there are many ways that data can be twisted and many biases that we could fall for .”
> “ The most useful tool that this course equipped me with was the vitality of ethical decision-making . I used to have quite a general understanding of ethics as just moral principles , but I now know that it is a lot more in-depth than that ... It also gave me further insight into addressing my own bias , and how influential and prevalent bias can inhibit individuals from making the most ethical decisions .”
> “ One approach I have applied in a real-world setting is the 7-step ethical decision framework which I utilised when buying new shoes . I used a form of this framework to ensure that the shoes I ended up purchasing would not severely detriment key stakeholders like the environment or labourers in poor working conditions . Upon completing this course , I realise that sound frameworks must be established before solving a problem .”
> “ I also found the 7-step ethical decision-making framework a particularly valuable tool that I will continue to use , not only in my studies and future career , but in my personal life as well . After completing this course , I have become much more aware of the world around me .”
