2.3 Indigenous Strategy and Initiatives
As reported in our
2019 SIP report , the
UNSW Indigenous Strategy was launched in 2018 and represents UNSW ’ s continued commitment to creating an environment for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students , researchers and staff to thrive . UNSW has always led the way as a pioneer in Indigenous education and research – as well as in contributing to important nation-building activities like the
Uluru Statement from the Heart . The UNSW Indigenous Strategy , and its three pillars – Culture and Country / Give Back / Grow Our Own , builds on this history , creating a clear structure to help guide the future of UNSW .
The strategy commits UNSW to , among other things , attempting to increase Indigenous students in the domestic student intake to 3 % by 2025 ( currently 1.5 %). This goal reflects that the resident Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population of Australia as of 30 June 2016 was 798,400 people , or 3.3 % of the total Australian population ( source : ABS ). This is a University Council KPI , which is cascaded to each Faculty . Both intake rates and percentage of students completing are important measures and UNSW will monitor its growth in Indigenous students to ensure that the completion rate is not compromised .
