Challenge
Australia is facing a national teacher shortage. Attempts to attract and retain teachers mean little if they can’ t afford to live near where they are most needed. Linking disparate data through emerging technologies, the HATS team provides evidence on where workers are experiencing housing and commuting stress, impacting workforce sustainability.
Solution
Through a world-first technique for assessing the commutability of schools, the HATS team provides new insights into workforce distribution and its impact on teacher shortages. It also provides benchmarking data on housing affordability and commuting distances of workers, as well as robust data and evidence needed to inform key worker housing interventions that are contextually sensitive and politically, socially and economically feasible.
Target customers / end-users
• government: evidence to develop workforce sustainability interventions
• industry groups: data to campaign for worker needs
• developers: identifying strategic sites and dwelling requirements.
Progress
• worked with Domain to develop an interactive website visualising data
• partnered with teacher unions in NSW and Victoria on teacher housing campaigns
• informed legislative inquiry into key worker housing.
