When an abortion is performed when live birth is possible (about 24 weeks or more), the baby is injected to cause death. Medication is injected into the amniotic fluid, umbilical cord or directly into the baby's heart. The baby's head is crushed and is suctioned out along with the rest of the body so it doesn't become infected and cause harm to the mother. This is done in order to comply with federal law which requires the baby to be dead before removal from the mother's body.
