In the 50s and 60s, the Pop Art Movement was different and new, emerging from the Surrealism and Abstract Expressionism Movements. In the Surrealism Movement, artists such as Salvador Dali and Rene Magritte were popular. This period showcased visual artworks and writings. In the Abstract Expressionism Movement, it showcased very abstract, or art that uses only shapes, colors, forms, and textures, pieces of art. An artist very well known in this period was Jackson Pollock.
Shot Marilyns - This creative piece of art features the iconic 1950s - 1960s celebrity, Marilyn Monroe. This piece has non-representational colors of pop art that don’t depict the artist’s inner sensation of the world. It refers to pop culture. It consists of four canvases, each measuring 40 inches and each shot through in the forehead by a single bullet.
Warhol created this piece by using a reference photo taken by Gene Korman in 1953 for the film Niagara. He used this image for screenprinting, and this iconic piece of art came out in 1964. Today, this work has been created several different times, experimenting with different colors.
