Jordan Abelson The Effect of the Vaginal Microbiota on Infertility The human reproductive microbiome has been implicated as a contributor to infertility . The vaginal microbiota is uniquely populated with various species of Lactobacillus ; reproductive tracts dominated with these species demonstrate greater success with fertilization and implantation . Research indicates this may be due , in part , to impacts on sperm motility and embryo implantation , revealing possible mechanisms to prevent and treat infertility .
Jessica Azzarano Antibiotic Resistance Properties of Bacteria Identified on Fish in the Trewellyn Creek The goal of this study was to determine a link between normal fish external flora and antibiotic resistance . A comparison of bacterial diversity revealed that most bacterial species identified were Gramnegative , and Sorenson ’ s Coefficients indicated that microbiomes between fish species were more dissimilar than similar . Antibiotic resistance tests demonstrated relatively high resistance to antibiotics among bacteria isolated from the fish .
Danielle Brown Discovering the Effect of Ethanol on Alternatively Activated Microglia Alcohol use disorder is a chronic brain disorder characterized by neurodegeneration . Recent research has identified ethanol as the possible cause , believing that it classically activates microglia , initiating a neurotoxic cascade that kills neurons . Conversely , microglia can also be activated to facilitate neuronal repair . In this paper , experiments were proposed to discover the possible link between alcohol and this neurotrophic pathway in hopes of developing treatment options for AUD-induced neurodegeneration .
