“The Pennsylvania System”: The Foundings of Solitary
Confinement in the United States
The Pennsylvania System was a prison reform movement that
emerged out of Philadelphia. This penal system revolves around
the principle that solitary confinement would encourage reformation of oneself
and foster penitence. These ideas were advocated by a prison reform group
known as the Philadelphia Society for Alleviating the Miseries of Public
Prisons. The Pennsylvania System was practiced at the Walnut Street Prison,
Western State Penitentiary, and Eastern State Penitentiary before being
replaced by the Auburn Prison System.

Kangaroo Care
Kangaroo Care is the essential activity where a parent holds their
infant to their chest. This activity is linked to numerous benefits.
Although much research supports this practice, it is underutilized
in hospitals today. This presentation will examine why it is not implemented
as it should, as well as propose possible solutions to increase the prevalence of
Kangaroo Care.
