Richard Vivers steps out for charity
Wood-Mizer's chief operating officer
Richard Vivers took part in the annual
Itex Rotary charity walk in June,
completing the 48.1 mile (77.41km)
route in his target time of 13.5 hours.
More than 1100 people took part in
the event, which follows the coastline of
Jersey on a complete circuit of the
island.
Richard Vivers has been a keen
participant in the sport of 'fast walking'
for many years, but this is the first time
he has entered for the Itex Rotary walk.
"We did two 25 mile (40km) training
walks and I did a lot of research into
nutrition", said Richard. "When you are
fast walking at 5mph (8km/h) you can
lose up to 3 kilograms during a 25 mile
walk and it is essential to eat and drink
the right food at the right time,
otherwise you become ill.
"It is common to 'carbo-load' before
such an event and I had to eat a lot of
carbohydrates starting a few days
before the event, which meant eating a
lot of Polish cakes - that was a struggle,
of course, but somebody has to do it!"
The walk is held every year to raise
money for charities. Richard used the
opportunity to raise money for three
schools for young and handicapped
people in Kolo, the Polish town where
Wood-Mizer Industries is based. With
excellent support from the company's
employees and others, more than
Euro1300 was raised for the schools.
"I thoroughly enjoyed the experience
and the challenge of fast walking such a
long distance", said Richard. "It was
fantastic to raise money for local causes
and I am grateful for the support from
my sponsors".
