World-Leading Research | 23
We’re really proud that 97% of our research
was deemed to be world-leading, or of
international importance, in the most recent
Research Excellence Framework.
Why is this important when choosing
an undergraduate degree? Well, a
reputation for research excellence
helps us to attract the best
academics. This then means that
as a student, you have access
to these experts and their work
directly contributes to the content
and quality of our undergraduate
courses.
At Keele, much of the research
that we do takes place within three
research institutes, which bring
together academics from across
the University to tackle some of
society’s most pressing challenges:
• The Research Institute for Social
Inclusion, which tackles the issues
of inequality on a local, national
and global scale.
• The Research Institute for
Sustainable Futures, which
develops innovative solutions to
some of the world's most pressing
sustainability challenges.
• The Research Institute for Global
Health, which seeks to improve
the quality of life of the some
of the world’s most vulnerable
populations.
Some of the projects we're
currently working on at Keele:
Food security
We’re leading a new £1m research
project to investigate solutions
to the rising problem of the fall
armyworm in Africa, which is
destroying livelihoods and causing
estimated crop losses worth $3
billion each year. Our researchers
are developing a novel pest
management system which fights
nature with nature, without using
pesticides.
they work with, working closely
with three of the UK’s largest
police forces – West Midlands,
West Yorkshire and the Met.
Understanding the universe
Researchers from Keele are leading
several international projects to
explore the origins of the universe,
the formation of stars and planetary
systems, and the search for
exoplanets.
Progressive prosthetics Investigating historic lives
Researchers from Keele are
transforming prosthetic hands by
recreating natural brain-to-hand
control signals so that prosthetic
hands will move and feel like the
real thing. We’re uncovering the stories of
thousands of people who were
involved in a very early welfare
system in Victorian England and
Wales by studying over 50,000
archived documents.
Low-carbon technology Turning our campus into
a living laboratory
We’re leading a new €4m research
project to develop low-carbon
combustion technologies, which
will support the development of
emerging solutions that could
replace fossil fuels and provide
low-carbon energy.
Improving policing We are transforming our campus
into the largest integrated smart
energy network demonstrator in
the whole of Europe, allowing us to
undertake at-scale living laboratory
research in order to develop new
sustainable technologies and
combat climate change.
We’re leading a major new
collaborative research programme
which aims to improve relationships
between police and the communities Our academics are working on
hundreds of research projects in
total – to discover more of them
