Geography and Geology
BSc (Hons)
Why study this course?
Geography and Geology is a natural combination providing the opportunity to
examine the interactions between human society and the physical world and to
develop broad-ranging perspectives on the key challenges facing society. This
flexible degree route includes both vocational option modules and an integrated
field course programme with no-cost options.
The first year provides a core foundation in Earth history, structure,
processes and materials as well as core geographical knowledge and
skills. The second and third years build on that core knowledge and
offer you the flexibility to pursue a diverse range of specialisms relevant
to your interests and career aspirations. There is strong emphasis
on developing both laboratory and fieldwork skills. Fieldwork is an
integral component and there is also the opportunity to undertake an
international year.
Within this course you will access and engage with the latest research;
utilise various methods, specialist equipment and software to collect,
analyse and interpret different types of data; devise and undertake
independent research; and use specialist software such as GIS to address
geographical and geological problems that will prepare you for a broad
range of careers.
What will this mean for my future?
You will develop a wide range of transferable skills with your interdisciplinary
perspectives, including communication, decision-making and problem-
solving skills, and the ability to research, evaluate and synthesise
information from diverse sources. Given current concerns around
environmental change and sustainability of natural resources, these
skills, highly valued by employers, are likely to continue to be in strong
demand in the future. You will develop subject-specific skills, including
the ability to manipulate, analyse and present geospatial data using
industry standard GIS software. This course will enable you to pursue
a broad range of careers or postgraduate research opportunities.
Previous graduates have entered careers in planning, local government,
environmental, geological and geophysical consultancies, logistics
management, energy companies, hydrogeology and water resource
management, mining, construction and transport planning as well as
continuing to postgraduate study.
