Geography, Geology and Environment | 203 Geography and Geology BSc (Hons) Why study this course? Geography and Geology is a natural combination providing the opportunity to examine the interactions between human society and the physical world and to develop broad-ranging perspectives on the key challenges facing society. This flexible degree route includes both vocational option modules and an integrated field course programme with no-cost options. The first year provides a core foundation in Earth history, structure, processes and materials as well as core geographical knowledge and skills. The second and third years build on that core knowledge and offer you the flexibility to pursue a diverse range of specialisms relevant to your interests and career aspirations. There is strong emphasis on developing both laboratory and fieldwork skills. Fieldwork is an integral component and there is also the opportunity to undertake an international year. Within this course you will access and engage with the latest research; utilise various methods, specialist equipment and software to collect, analyse and interpret different types of data; devise and undertake independent research; and use specialist software such as GIS to address geographical and geological problems that will prepare you for a broad range of careers. What will this mean for my future? You will develop a wide range of transferable skills with your interdisciplinary perspectives, including communication, decision-making and problem- solving skills, and the ability to research, evaluate and synthesise information from diverse sources. Given current concerns around environmental change and sustainability of natural resources, these skills, highly valued by employers, are likely to continue to be in strong demand in the future. You will develop subject-specific skills, including the ability to manipulate, analyse and present geospatial data using industry standard GIS software. This course will enable you to pursue a broad range of careers or postgraduate research opportunities. Previous graduates have entered careers in planning, local government, environmental, geological and geophysical consultancies, logistics management, energy companies, hydrogeology and water resource management, mining, construction and transport planning as well as continuing to postgraduate study.
