Geography

Why study this course?
Positioned between the physical and social sciences, Geography provides
broad-ranging perspectives on key challenges facing society. These programmes
consistently receive high levels of student satisfaction, and rank in the Top 10 for
Geography in the Guardian 2018 University Guide. The Single Honours programme
is accredited by the Royal Geographical Society.
The programmes are taught by staff with a reputation for teaching
excellence and innovation. The first year provides a core foundation from
which you have the flexibility to pursue a diverse range of specialisms within
the second and third years. You’ll learn to access and engage with the
latest research; utilise professional methods to collect, analyse and interpret
different types of data; devise and undertake independent research; and
use specialist software such as GIS to address geographical problems.
Fieldwork is integral to the programmes with Keele’s campus providing
a unique venue for local activities. Residential field course options are a
highlight for many and we offer routes that involve no additional costs.
You will have access to excellent computing and laboratory facilities, the
opportunity to study abroad and to gain work placement experience.
What will this mean for my future?
You'll develop a wide range of transferable skills and your interdisciplinary
perspectives, problem-solving skills, and ability to research, evaluate
and synthesise information from diverse sources will be highly valued
by employers. You will also develop a suite of subject-specific skills,
including the ability to manipulate, analyse and present spatial data
using industry standard GIS software that are in high demand from
government, environmental agencies, insurance companies and property
developers. Geography graduates have one of the highest employment
rates of graduate employment and pursue a wide range of careers
paths. Recent graduates from Keele have developed successful careers
in environmental consultancy, teaching, geospatial analysis, transport
planning, logistics management and water resource management. These
programmes also provide excellent training for further postgraduate
study and research.
