A study of a specialized subject area which may vary based on student / faculty interest . For non- major students only . The topic , course structure and instructor will be announced prior to preregistration . There are no prerequisites . This course examines the relationship between Planet Earth and its inhabitants . Drawing from the fields of astronomy , geology , meteorology and environmental science , the course looks at Planet Earth through the lens of social responsibility ; it considers the interrelationship between the physical characteristics of the planet and the characteristics and welfare of its inhabitants in light of our stewardship of the universe and of each other . The course is researchand writing-intensive . Three credits - three lecture hours per week .

This course focuses on women which is one of the five critical concerns of the Sisters of Mercy : Earth , nonviolence , women , racism and immigration . Students will learn about the many ways in which women are imprisoned by the social conditions of our time : poverty , food insecurity , domestic violence , human trafficking and incarceration . The course will examine the experience of women and those whom the love , particularly their children . This course meets the University ' s definition of writing intensive .
