REBECCA PIERCE is currently pursuing an Mres in History, having received her undergraduate
degree, also in History, from Keele last academic year. Whilst Rebecca’s undergraduate
dissertation focussed on gender in Georgian Britain, her interests have moved across the
Atlantic and now centres upon women in the Civil War South. Rebecca has been keeping busy
over the last few months with work for several different publications and conferences. Later
this year she will have a book review published in History: The Journal of the Historical Society
and has recently returned from giving a paper at the British Conference of Undergraduate
Research in Cardiff. In June, her research on Early Modern tennis will be used for the signage
for a modern art instillation at a local National Trust property, and she is immensely excited
to see the finished product.
NATALIE ILSLEY studied at Keele University where she obtained a BA (Hons) in English and
American Literatures; she then moved on to the University of Edinburgh to complete my MSc
in International and European Politics. Natalie has also written for various publications,
including The Guardian and The Independent, and was Editor-in-Chief of Concourse (2014-
15) here at Keele. While she worked in London as a Journalist for Newsweek, Natalie
completed a number of graphic design projects for the British Library and Imperial College
London. Her academic portfolio also includes: Crossings: A Journal of Migration and Culture.
Natalie's research combines her interdisciplinary background. She explores how migrant
women negotiate the ambivalent experience of being resilient subjects through the creative
arts produced in the context of non-governmental organisations (NGOs). This research will
focus on women based in Glasgow and Stoke-on-Trent because both cities represent different
