Introduction
Due to the success of the two previous issues of Under Construction @ Keele it came as no
surprise when we received a large amount of interest when advertising for new posts. We
were delighted to recruit four new members to take on the roles of Humanities Editor, Social
Sciences Editor, Publicist and Peer Review Liaison Officer. Due to the dedication of our
previous team the transition was swift and the new members took to their roles with
enthusiasm. Once again we were overwhelmed by the positive response our call for papers
received, resulting in a plethora of fascinating proposals to choose from. The diverse
research projects covered by the students at Keele University never cease to amaze us and
this issue is a brief glimpse into some of them.
By pure coincidence three of our papers are provided by Psychology postgraduates.
That three papers from one discipline could be so varied is a demonstration of how diverse
subjects within the Social Sciences can be. Grant Bosworth’s article provides a technical
insight into the psychological aspects behind environmental values and Claire Melia
showcases a glimpse of her study into the power of laughter in quelling disputes in
relationships. Angela Blanchard’s piece works as a bridge between disciplines as, not only is
her work imbued with a creative element, Angela has also provided illustrations so the
reader can visualise the struggles faced within her research. Continuing on with the creative
element we are delighted to publish the poetry of Lizzy Trafford as we take a fascinating look
into the inspiration behind her creative work. We are delighted that Jason Balzarano, whose
prose is as beautiful as the music he describes, has contributed a second music review.
Finally, after all her hard work on the previous two issues, we are delighted to present a
piece of work by Gemma Scott. Her article demonstrates her fascinating research into the
unheard voices of women during the Emergency in India.
There were a number of challenges faced in the creation of this issue and I would like
to thank my team members who demonstrated their commitment and professionalism.
Thank you to the editing team, particularly those who took on extra responsibilities and
always met their deadlines. To our fabulous publicity team, Wallis and Julia, who are
continually expanding the reach of the journal. Our Peer Review Liaison Officer, Sophie, has
shown her utmost dedication to the role and the publication; she is a valued new member of
the team. Finally, to our Communication’s Secretary James, who has been a constant
source of updates and a committed member of the team since the very beginning.
Looking ahead to the future, the journal continues to grow. Later this year we will be
publishing a special edition of the journal in conjunction with the ‘Byron & the Romantic
World’ Conference being held at Keele in September. We will also shortly be advertising for
new members to join the journal team. This is an excellent and eye-opening experience for
