Analysis and Discussion
The thematic analysis identified four key themes that include amplifying feminist voices , central and accessible space for awareness , dialogue and negotiation , mobilizing for justice and accountability , and bridging geographic and economic divides . A hybrid approach was used to identify codes deductively from feminist literature and inductively from tweets . The codes were organised under four themes for analysis , revealing relationships between digital activism , global dialogue and government accountability .
Amplifying Feminist Voices
The # BringBackOurGirls campaign appropriately demonstrates that social media is a useful tool to raise the concerns of feminist activists and that local issues can easily be turned into global ones . This was a movement that was solely confined within Nigeria and had no tag until the # BringBackOurGirls went viral on Twitter a little over ten days after the abduction 26 when a Nigerian lawyer Ibrahim Abdullahi on 23 rd April , 2024 , tweeted , “ Yes # BringBackOurDaughters # BringBackOurGirls by @ obyezeks and all at Port Harcourt world book capital 2014 ” 27 .
As a result of this simple tweet , the movement grew in magnitude on Twitter where feminists like Oby Ezekwesili , a former Nigerian minister and World Bank Vice President ( Africa region ) and many others went on the platform to collectively seek the return of the girls . Ezekwesili ’ s tweet , “ It was @ Twitter that gave into our cry for Justice of Rescue for our 219 # ChibokGirls . Before there was ever a street march , there was one week of our Twitter Street cry that went global chanting : # BringBackOurGirls ! Since then , 107 are back . We cry for 112 still ” 28 explains why the emergence of social media has redefined activism both online and physically , suggesting that Twitter was instrumental to mobilising Nigerians online and offline .
