Twitter by prompting activists to seek justice and information about the incident , and organise and mobilise protests and engage with the public .
Perhaps the most widely known of these campaigns is # BringBackOurGirls , which launched in 2014 in response to the kidnapping of 276 schoolgirls by Boko Haram in Chibok , northeastern Nigeria . Using social media to spread the story and maintain global attention , the campaign used hashtags , viral images and co-ordinated postings on Twitter to keep the issue in the spotlight and maintain international political pressure on both the Nigerian government and the global community to take action 22 ’ 23 . The campaign ’ s swift and powerful media appeal and public outcry forced international and national leaders to take some concrete action on the crisis 24 .
Approach The study adopts a qualitative cross-case analysis methodology to examine the role of social media in Nigerian feminist activism by exploring the # BringBackOurGirls , # ArewaMeToo , and # JusticeForBamise Twitter campaigns . This methodology , based on Miles and Huberman ' s framework 25 , emphasises data reduction , display , and conclusion drawing . It systematically identifies patterns , themes , and relationships across cases , allowing a comparative analysis of dynamics in feminist activism , content from social media users , and the broader impacts on digital feminist movements . Some tweets posted using the hashtags were collected for this study to assess how the campaigns build support and enable global-level dialogue on issues affecting Nigerian women . A thematic analysis approach was used to identify major themes and patterns that cut across cases . Codes were organized using a hybrid approach , combining deductive coding based on pre-identified themes from literature with inductive coding drawn from the emerging patterns in the raw data ( tweets ). This ensured that the resultant analysis covered the full scope of the digital campaign ' s content and dynamics .
