The polar bear: the king of the arctic

By: Estefanía Galvis Ríos. 8-B
The polar bear is one of the most fascinating and extraordinary animals in the Arctic. It has adapted over approximately 500,000 years, ever since some grizzly bears became isolated in the north due to cold temperatures. However, climate change and the melting of the ice are creating serious challenges for this species.
Its scientific name is Ursus maritimus. It lives in the freezing regions of the Arctic surrounding the North Pole, including Canada, the USA( Alaska), Russia, Denmark( Greenland), and Norway. Its habitat is sea ice, where it uses ice platforms to travel, rest, and hunt for food. Unfortunately, the species is endangered because of climate change and global warming caused by pollution, industrial development, and other human activities. As a result, polar bears are losing their habitat, facing increased shipping traffic, and accumulating toxic pollutants in their food supply.
Nowadays, the polar bear is officially classified as“ vulnerable” on the IUCN Red List, with an estimated population of between 22,000 and 31,000 individuals in the wild. While global numbers are currently stable, if greenhouse gas emissions continue at their present pace, the population could suffer severe declines by the year 2100. Recently, governments and global organizations such as the WWF and Polar Bears International have been taking action through several strategies: regulating industrial activities, reducing human-bear conflicts, protecting endemic areas, tracking populations to monitor their health, diet, and adaptation, and advocating for climate policies to reduce carbon emissions and slow down global warming.
