The third round proved to be a pivotal point in the tournament as the top two seeds, Michael van Gerwen and Simon Whitlock both fell victim to comebacks. Van Gerwen was defeated by Andy Hamilton, who came from 3-0 down to secure a 6-4 victory. The Dutchman opened the match with checkouts of 78 and 110 and soon found himself in front, but Hamilton produced a fine display of darts that saw him land no less than three 14-darters and an 11-darter on his way to levelling up at 4-4.
