Daily Mirror World Trop of the day. The players traded blow for blow throughout, and in the end it was Ross, in no small part down to the three finishes of 104, who came through. Final Photo: Tip Top Pics Ltd/BDO Events Ltd James Wilson defeated Ross Montgomery 13-11 in a thrilling final that looked at one point as though it was going to sudden death. Montgomery took the opening leg of the match after Wilson had missed a dart at the bull to hold throw. The Yorkshireman responded immediately, landing a 180 to break back, before the players traded legs to head in at the first break at 3-3. Wilson took three back-to-back legs after the break to open up a considerable lead, but Montgomery responded well and had narrowed the gap to 7-5 by the time the players left the stage for a second time. It was Montgomery who started better after the second break, taking back-to-back legs of his own to level the match at 7-7 before a further burst from Wilson saw the Yorkshireman keep in touch as the scoreline moved onto 9-9. The nineteenth leg was a scrappy one that Wilson eventually took, only to be pegged back again thanks to a 108 checkout from Montgomery in the twentieth. Montgomery then moved into the lead for the first time since the opening leg thanks to a 14-darter, only to find himself on the wring end of an immediate break back. It’s a first major for me, hopefully the first of many! I have been trying for this for so long now and it’s finally come true, hopefully I can go on and lift the World Title now too.” “I saw Ross win the Dutch Open last week and I saw him coming up through the other side of the draw this week. I knew that once I got there too it was going to be a cracking final.” Wilson, who had trailed at some point during virtually every one of his matches, added, “I have never seen anybody come back as often as I have this week, it doesn’t matter how far down you are as long as you have that spirit you just have to fight and fight and never give up.” The Verdict Some great things came out of the inaugural BDO World Trophy, not “You wouldn’t believe how good it feels to hold this trophy in my hand” James Wilson
