Person-centred Coaching
Introducing the PEOPLE Principles of Great Coaching
We devised the Principles of Great Coaching to help everyone in the UK,
not just coaching organisations but employers, partners and participants to
understand what Great Coaching looks like.
24
The six principles (Person-centred,
Empowering, Organised, Positive,
Learning, Engaging) spell out
PEOPLE, an acronym that is as easy
to remember as it is appropriate –
because coaching is all about people.
We chose these key principles
following close consultation
with over 500 organisations and
individuals. We asked what Great
Coaching looked like and how it
made them feel. We increased
exposure and traction of the PEOPLE
principles through use of the
#GreatCoaching hashtag on social
media in all our campaigns and at all
our events.
Embedding a
Person-centred
Philosophy in
Coaching
The Coaching the Person in Front
of You philosophy was introduced
to help the coaching community
understand the needs of their
participants; better connect with them
to build positive relationships, and
create environments in which they
can thrive.
Now the Coaching the Person in
Front of You workshop and digital
guidance – underpinned by Connect
+ Understand = Thrive – enables
organisations to educate coaches
about the benefits of putting
people’s feelings, thoughts, ambitions
and aspirations at the centre of
everything coaches do.
Connect + Understand = Thrive
1. Connect – engage and connect with
people
2. Understand – identify and
understand the needs of the person
in front of you
3. Thrive – create an environment in
which people can thrive.
“I really enjoyed the workshop.
The tutor was really enthusiastic
and knowledgeable. I don’t think as
coaches we think about this side
of coaching and often it’s taken for
granted that we can relate to the
individual or group we’re working
with.
