Learning through Mother Tongue
language in UISG
An IB education is unique because of its rigorous academic and personal standards. It is holistic in nature, concerned with the development of the whole child. Our learners strive to become inquirers, knowledgeable, thinkers, communicators, principled, open-minded, caring, risk-takers, balanced and reflective. These attributes challenge students to excel not only in academic studies, but also promote balance and well-being, nurturing personal growth.
UISG identifies and celebrates the many ways students construct meaning and make sense of the world. The role of language is central to developing critical thinking. We believe purposeful inquiry, within a relevant, authentic context, is the way in which students learn best. Our unique languages programme immerses students within each Unit of Inquiry in their own Mother Tongue.
Our Mother Tongue teachers plan collaboratively with classroom teachers to create learning engagements that allow students to learn through their own Mother Tongue language. This allows for deeper conceptual knowledge and understanding –students are empowered to make connections, reinforce, support and extend classroom learning, whilst also maintaining their cultural identity
Communicating in a variety of modes, in more than one language, is essential to the concept of an international, intercultural education. Language plays an essential role in our journey to becoming internationally-minded.
