UISG - DP Special Features Extended Essay 2018 | Página 3
Introduction
The Extended Essay is not easy. A mandatory, 4000 word,
academic essay on the subject and topic of your choice,
completed over 18 months and involving independent
research, analysis, and evaluation, the Extended Essay can
only be described as a challenge. However, it does not
necessarily have to be a challenge of great difficulty or
discomfort. If you commit to the process from the beginning,
engage with your teachers and supervisors, and spread your
research and writing out over 18 months, then the Extended Essay can be a hugely rewarding
process. After all, should you decide to go to university, you’ll be required to write several such
essays a semester! This guide has been designed to provide an overview on the steps
involved towards handing in that final submission- it has the essential information th at you’ll
need, and tips on how and where to access resources. Hopefully it will be of some assistance
on your journey. However, it is not exhaustive, and needs to be used together with the various
IB documents filed on managebac, and in close collaboration with your supervisor.
All the best in the next 18 months, and in the Extended Essay process that (hopefully!) you’ve
already begun.

Researching the Extended Essay
A great Extended Essay is built on a foundation of great research; a poor one collapses on
poor research. The importance of research is highlighted by the fact that it is mentioned
specifically in five of the six assessment criteria, with a combined 30 marks out of the overall
34. Research focus and research skills are therefore essential components of achieving a
good grade in the Extended Essay.
Many of you will have experienced research skills through your subjects, and you will also be
able to turn to your supervisors for advice and guidance. Below are some initial/
complementary tips:
Ensure that your sources are reliable- ideally peer-reviewed, academic works.
