Grounds Graced with historic quadrangles and mature canopy trees, UGA is recognized as one of the most beautiful college campuses in the US. Historically significant landscapes are carefully managed to preserve the legacy of the University and newer landscapes are optimized for ecological performance and restoration. UGA is designated as a Campus Arboretum with a Sustainable Tree Trust that ensures long-term viability of the campus tree canopy. Tree mapping in north, south and east campus precincts has documented over 9,000 individual trees in developed campus areas providing air and water quality, shade, urban habitat and beauty. In FY14, UGA was awarded Tree Campus USA status for the fourth consecutive year and received preservation awards for restoration of the historic North Campus Iron Fence and the Thomas Church-designed courtyard at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education. Over 70 rain gardens and other best management practices improve storm water quality and watershed health at UGA. The Chew Crew prescribed grazing project reduces the need for fossil fuels, machinery or chemicals to restore native forest habitat on UGA’s campus. The Facilities Management Division Grounds Department composts organic leaf and limb debris along with animal bedding to create nutrient-rich compost for restoring campus soils and nurturing the campus landscape.
