UGA Extension
UGA Extension, the outreach unit of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and the College of Family
and Consumer Sciences, extends lifelong learning to the people of Georgia through unbiased, research-based
education in sustainable agricultural and gardening practices, the environment, health and nutrition, and youth and
families. UGA Extension has 280 agents that live and work in nearly each of the state’s 159 counties. Every dollar
invested in UGA Extension saves taxpayers’ dollars in the long run and returns $3 for every $1 invested in Georgia
counties.
In FY14, UGA Extension published impact reports on agricultural systems resilient to climate change, benefits of wildlife
refuges, and the role of chemicals in honey bee loss, communicating timely information to farmers and community
gardeners. UGA Extension highlights include collection of 60,000 pounds of pesticides from 21 counties; 3,200
Georgia Master Gardener Extension volunteers logged in 203,975 hours teaching sustainable gardening practices;
energy assessments for 42 poultry farms, three dairies, a turf grass farm and a row-crop farm; agents trained 100 farmers
in organic production and provided assistance to urban farmers, community gardeners and teachers for school gardens
as a means to provide fresh food to underserved communities .
