Your study Criminology is a field of social science that focusses on the causes of crime, crime prevention, the systems of social control, and the treatment, rehabilitation and punishment of criminals. A selection of subjects for this course includes: Major overview • Crime Prevention & Community Safety This major was developed in consultation with community organisations, Queensland Police, Corrective Services, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations, Department of Communities, Education Queensland and local councils. It combines the study of Sociology, Social Work, Law, Anthropology, Indigenous Affairs and Psychology. Graduates are prepared for work in a variety of roles in criminal justice and community-based agencies concerned with social justice. Students can choose to combine this major with another Bachelor of Arts major (double major). To add further value it is possible to combine the Bachelor of Arts with another degree (see Joint degree opportunities). Major highlights Students complete a group research project in third year, in conjunction with Townsville and Cairns agencies. Professional recognition Graduates can join the Australian Institute of Criminology. Career opportunities Criminology graduates can pursue careers with a variety of organisations including: • Police services (federal and state) • Deviance, Crime and Society • Green Criminology • Advanced Criminological Research Design & Practice • Youth Deviance. Students are encouraged to gain a second major in an Arts or Social Science area, thereby providing a further distinguishing feature to their course. The subjects required for a second major will utilise the space allocated to electives and will not extend the duration of your studies.
