freshwater field research facilities and field stations, JCU’s own research vessels and state-of-theart wet/dry laboratories. These programs lead to professional accreditation, and emphasise field work, practical experience and links with major government and private resource management agencies and research centres. The Bachelor of Science includes the following specialisations ?? Aquaculture ?? Ecology and Conservation ?? Environmental Science ?? Environmental and Marine Geosciences ?? Geography ?? Marine Biology ?? Mathematics ?? Physics ?? Science (General) ?? Zoology It is also possible to study a number of double degrees at JCU – gaining two qualifications in a shorter amount of time. The Bachelor of Science can also be combined as a joint degree with arts, education, engineering and laws. The Bachelor of Science also includes the following health science majors (see page 30) ?? Biochemistry and Molecular Biology ?? Chemistry ?? Genetics and Genomics ?? Microbiology ?? Pharmacology ?? Physiology
As well as teaching fundamental aquaculture principles, the program has a strong emphasis on the sustainable aquaculture of tropical species. Outstanding facilities include JCU’s Marine and Aquaculture Research Facility in Townsville and the Orpheus Island Research Station on the Barrier Reef. The Orpheus Island Research Station, located in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, allows students to work in the field with sponge, reef fish and mollusc culture, while having easy access to temperature controlled rooms, laboratories and lecture theatres. Career opportunities Graduates can choose from a range of career options, ranging from technical positions in hatcheries and grow-out facilities, to managerial and research roles. Graduates can pursue careers as business managers, policy developers or government administrators in commercial fish farms; public and private hatcheries; aquaculture and aligned support industries (food production, pollution and disease control and specialist equipment); biotechnology companies; fisheries management; environmental protection; and conservation. A selection of subjects for this major include ?? Introduction to Aquaculture ?? Aquaculture of Tropical Species ?? Marine Microbiology ?? Aquaculture: Systems Design ?? Aquaculture: Stock Improvement ?? Sustainable Aquaculture Practices ?? Aquaculture: Propagation of Species ?? Aquaculture: Feeds and Nutrition ?? Fisheries Science
Ecology and Conservation
Course highlights JCU is renowned for its teaching and research in biological science. Teaching staff include world leaders in their research fields – JCU was recently ranked 1st in Australia for Environment and Ecology citations by Thompson’s Essential Science Indicators. Students have access to a range of environments around northern Queensland for field trips and practical study including the World Heritage rainforests of the Wet Tropics and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park – plus outback, savanna, wetlands, agricultural and urban areas. Career opportunities Our graduates find employment locally, nationally and internationally as researchers, academics, teachers, environmental assessors and consultants in universities, research organisations, government agencies and environmental consultancy firms, including those agencies listed above. With further study graduates can progress into a research career in ecology. A selection of subjects for this major include ?? Ecology and Conservation ?? Ecological Genetics ?? Adaptations to Environmental Change ?? Conservation Biology ?? Population and Community Ecology ?? Biodiversity and Climate Change ?? Rainforest Ecosystems ?? Pla nt Survival in a Land of Fire, Flood and Drought
who enjoy fieldwork and are interested in learning how to solve environmental problems. Both Cairns and Townsville campuses are close to the World Heritage listed Wet Tropics rainforests and the Great Barrier Reef, as well as savannas and wetlands. Career opportunities Environmental Scientists use their interdisciplinary training to work in a range of environmental planning and management areas including environmental impact assessment, conservation and land management, coastal zone management, pollution management, mine site rehabilitation, environmental planning, and environmental education. A selection of subjects for this major include ?? Icehouse to Greenhouse ?? Field Studies in Tropical Water and Soil Science ?? Environmental Impact Assessment ?? Advanced Hydrology ?? Earth and Environmental Geochemistry ?? Conserving Marine Wildlife: Sea Mammals, Birds, Reptiles ?? Conserving Tropical Rainforests
Environmental and Marine Geosciences
Course Highlights The degree takes advantage of our strategic position, with access to a varied collection of tropical landscapes (including the Great Barrier Reef), hydrological and climate regimes, and proximal to a range of important industries (such as mining) in which graduates from this program could seek employment. The course is focused on understanding and dealing with earth surface processes, deposits and landforms, including those in the marine and coastal realm.
Aquaculture
Course highlights James Cook University’s Aquaculture program will prepare you for a future in one of the world’s fastest growing primary industries. Our strong links with peak aquaculture industries and research providers provides students valuable practical and research experience based on latest developments in the industry.
Environmental Science
Course highlights The Environmental Science major provides a thorough education concerning the environmental challenges facing mankind. This is a program for students
