BACHELOR OF MARINE SCIENCE
In 2006, JCU became the first university outside Europe to receive international recognition for its degree in marine science from the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMaREST). Emphasis is on practical experience with a strong field work component. Students have access to outstanding facilities and natural environments, including JCU’s Orpheus Island Research Station, James Kirby research vessel, research aquarium, labs, the coral reefs of the Great Barrier Reef, and seagrass beds and mangroves. Graduates are eligible to join the Australian Marine Science Association, the Australian Coral Reef Society, and numerous other professional bodies. This course involves inter-institutional teaching with the Universities of Sydney and Queensland. Course highlights JCU is recognised around the world as a leading institution for Marine Science with six of the world’s top 10 coral reef biologists at JCU. This is a multidisciplinary course ensuring generic skills so students can respond to changes in the job market for marine science worldwide.
Career opportunities Graduates can pursue careers throughout the world with private and government agencies, or as private consultants in conservation policy and environmental management, impact assessment, tourism and education.
