JCU is uniquely located for the study of science and the environment. The Cairns and Townsville campuses enjoy easy access to two World Heritage Areas – the Great Barrier Reef and the ancient rainforests of the Wet Tropics, as well as dry tropic environments, savannas and wetlands.
The Faculty is world renowned for its expertise, facilities and research successes. Areas of expertise include: marine science and marine biology, physical oceanography with particular relevance to the Great Barrier Reef, aquaculture, environmental science (including conservation), fluid mechanics, geology, minerals processing, tropical ecology and zoology. As a student in the Faculty of Science and Engineering, you will have opportunities for hands-on and practical experience including field trips, modern technology, access to field stations and research facilities, links to industry and government agencies, and lecturers who are prominent researchers in their fields. Graduates work in Australia and overseas in industry, research, government, schools, universities and consultancies. The Faculty boasts a range of excellent research centres and facilities including the Aquarium Complex, Australian Centre for Tropical Freshwater Research, Australian Canopy Crane Research Station, Bioinformatics Applications Research Centre, Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies, Centre for Disaster Studies, Cyclone Structural Testing Station, Economic Geology Research Unit and Orpheus Island Research Station. JCU also offers a Bachelor of Science (Advanced) and Bachelor of Marine Biology (Advanced) degree for high achieving students who have performed well in high school or the first year of their studies. Enrolment is by invitation only. Students have the opportunity to participate more in the academic and research culture of their chosen discipline.
