David C. Cleveland, MD, is assistant professor of surgery in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at UAB and associate program director of the cardiothoracic residency program. He received his undergraduate degree from Auburn University, his medical degree at UAB, his residency and fellowship at Toronto General and Toronto Sick Children’ s Hospital, and his MBA degree in 2009 at Auburn University. He is a past chief of pediatric cardiac surgery for the Children’ s Hospital in Buffalo, The Children’ s Hospital at Medical City Dallas, and St. Joseph’ s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix, Ariz. In Phoenix he founded the Eller Congenital Heart Center and served as its executive director until his departure in 2011.
Dr. Cleveland has a major interest in developing medical student educational programs and enhancing resident training. His special interests include early repair of complex congenital heart disease, fetal intervention, adult congenital heart disease, and outcomes measurement for continuous performance improvement. He is a member of the American Medical Association, American College of Surgeons, American Academy of Pediatrics, Society of Thoracic Surgery, Southern Thoracic Surgical Society, World Society for Pediatric and Congenital Heart Surgery, American College of Physician Executives, and American College of Healthcare Executives.
Franjo Siric, MD, is assistant professor of surgery in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at UAB. He received his undergraduate degree, MD, and cardiothoracic training at the University of Zagreb. After practicing as a cardiac surgeon in Croatia for five years, Dr. Siric received additional specialized training in minimally invasive valve repair surgery at Brigham and Women’ s Hospital in Boston. Additionally, he received extensive training in heart and lung failure and transplantation surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. His clinical and research interests include total arterial revascularization, minimally invasive mitral and aortic valve surgery, aortic valve, thoracic aortic surgery, thoracic transplantation, heart and lung assist device surgery, and clinical outcomes. He is a member of the American Medical Association and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons.
Constantine Athanasuleas, MD, is a professor of surgery in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at UAB. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Chicago, his medical degree from Pritzker School of Medicine, and his residency and fellowship under the direction of Dr. Norman Shumway at Stanford University. His clinical and research interests include adult coronary artery bypass, aortic surgery, and valvular surgery, including minimally invasive methods. He has visited and instructed surgeons around the country in the technique of surgical ventricular restoration for dilated cardiomyopathy. He organized and reported a multi-center study of this operation and is recognized as a leader in the field. He is a member of the UAB Center of Cardiovascular Biology, American College of Chest Physicians, American College of Cardiology, American College of Surgeons, Society of Thoracic Surgeons, American Association for Thoracic Surgeons, American Heart Association, University of Chicago Surgical Society, and Birmingham Cardiovascular Society.
