William L. Holman, MD, is professor of surgery in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at UAB, associate director of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Residency Training Program, and chief of surgical services at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Birmingham. He received his undergraduate degree from Williams College, his medical degree at Duke University( under the training of David Sabiston, MD), and his residency and fellowship at Duke University, where he also performed research during his residency in the laboratory of Dr. James Cox. Dr. Holman was an instructor in cardiac surgery at UAB under Albert Pacifico, MD, and he joined the faculty in 1988. He has worked in several areas of research including cardiac arrhythmias, ischemia-reperfusion injury, and outcomes analysis for patient with heart assist devices. He has been awarded grants from the NIH, American Heart Association( including an Established Investigator award), the VA, and industry. He has been a member of NIH and VA study sections and currently is chairman of the American Heart Association( AHA) Surgery Study Section. He started the ventricular assist device( VAD) program at UAB.
Dr. Holman has been a local PI for numerous FDA investigational new device trials of ventricular assist devices. He has been a member or chairman of several Data Safety Monitoring Boards for new surgical devices. His clinical interests include adult cardiac surgery( coronary artery bypass grafting and heart valve surgery) and surgery for heart failure( mechanical circulatory support devices). His research interests include topics in mechanical circulatory support and surgery for heart failure. He has participated in the training of five NIHfunded resident researchers and numerous clinical trainees in cardiothoracic surgery. He is a member of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, American College of Surgeons, American Surgical Association, AHA Council on Cardiovascular Surgery, AHA Council on Basic Science, American Society for Artificial Internal Organs( past-president 2010), Birmingham Cardiovascular Society( past-president 2000), Halsted Society, International Society for Heart Transplantation, Medical Association of the State of Alabama, Sabiston Surgical Society, Society of University Surgeons, Southern Surgical Association, and Southern Thoracic Surgical Association.
Robert J. Dabal, MD, is associate professor of surgery and chief of the Section of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at UAB and Children’ s of Alabama. He received his undergraduate degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, received his medical degree from Duke, and completed his cardiothoracic residency at the University of Washington. He received specialized training in pediatric cardiac surgery at Denver Children’ s Hospital and Boston Children’ s Hospital. After three years at Wolfson Children’ s Hospital in Jacksonville, Fla., he joined the UAB faculty in 2008.
Dr. Dabal’ s major research interests are in the areas of quality improvement and clinical outcomes research, including improving surgical care to decrease morbidity following neonatal cardiac surgery. His clinical interests include neonatal and pediatric cardiac surgery. Dr. Dabal has traveled extensively to operate on children with congenital heart defects, in countries such as Uganda, Nicaragua, Ecuador, China, Grenada, and Peru. He is a member of the American Medical Association, American College of Surgeons, Society of Thoracic Surgeons, International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation, Southern Thoracic Surgical Association, Jefferson County Medical Society, and Medical Association of the State of Alabama.
