Recognizing the Whisper

By Robin Leigh Vella

I was at an optical store when Spirit issued the silent warning. My heart told me that there was a problem with my new eye glasses; I had a feeling that something was wrong with them. Sure enough, when I put them on, I couldn’t see a thing. The sales associate that was assisting me asked if everything was OK. When I told him that everything was a blur, he spoke to me in a loud, harsh, intimidating voice. “There is no problem with your glasses, mam. You just need to break them in,” he said. “Try them for a week. If you are still experiencing challenges, bring them back and I will revisit your concerns.”

Reluctantly, I made my way out the door. That uncomfortable feeling followed me. It wasn’t long before I marched back in. “I am not going to pretend that I can see when that is not the case,” I said to the same man. Something is wrong, and I am not leaving here until we figure out how to solve this problem.”

Had I ignored my intuition, this could have been a very different story. There was a mistake at the lab. I was given the wrong prescription. I would have attempted to drive home wearing my reading glasses. Thank goodness I trusted the truth I was feeling in my heart.

We have all had that hunch–that undeniable gut feeling that has no basis in fact. And we have all experienced the consequences of pushing that feeling away. Spirit is always telling us the truth. But, for many of us, it is challenging to trust the whisper of our heart over the loud voice in our head. We are reluctant to accept our feelings as truth because we have been told that we need physical evidence to support those feelings; we have to have the facts. Moreover, we are not accustomed to receiving the answer without needing to ask the question.

As long as we are open, ready and willing to receive Divine Guidance, each and every one of us has the ability to hear our inner voice. We just have to know how to recognize the whisper. The following guideline offers some of the many ways we can attune ourselves to the vibration of truth:

Quiet your mind

Spirit is always speaking to us. But, unless we are peaceful, it is impossible to identify our inner voice; the whisper of our heart cannot compete with the noise in our head. Quieting our mind will allow us to recognize the truth when it surfaces. Anything that soothes our soul will bring us peace: prayer, meditation, walking through the woods, listening to soft music, baking a cake, mopping the kitchen floor, exercising at the gym… There are endless ways to make ourselves peaceful. How we make it happen is our choice.

Live in the Now

Spirit’s voice is ever-present, but we must be here in order to hear it. Reliving old memories prevents us from recognizing our intuition because it keeps us chained to the past. Worrying about tomorrow fills us with dark vibrations. Not only does it give us a heavy heart, but it also drowns out our inner voice.

Be present to Spirit by living your life one moment at a time. Center yourself in gratitude to fill your heart with light. Look for the good, and you will see that there is always something to celebrate.
