A year in Review

ne of the things I found so frustrating about my education as a child was the amount of "busywork" which seemed to have no value. I was always asking, "Why do I have to do this? How will I ever use this in the real world?"

Low and behold, I grow up to become an educator. Meaning, of course, that I homeschool my own children and find them asking me these very same questions about the work I am giving them. I find it a great pleasure to come up with ways their education doesn't have to be filled with busywork that is stuck in a box and is of no immediate relevance to them. Life is indeed short, and we need to harness every moment we can to fill our own lives with meaning by pouring ourselves out into others.

This year the kids spent a couple of weeks using their developing language and grammar skills to write our family Christmas newsletter. I wanted the kids to learn both to use proper grammar as well as to express themselves in ways that are true to who they are without getting lost in too many rules. This exercise turned out to be a huge blessing to me and I hope and pray it is for you as well.
