Scopes Monkey Trial
John Scopes
John Scopes was a simple school teacher, who was tried for violating Tennessee’s Butler Act, which prohibited evolution in curriculum.
Clarence Darrow
Spoke as Scopes’ defense attorney, and gave a worthy argument
to the nation to consider about Modernists and Fundamentalists.
William Jennings Bryan
Strong Democrat who fought against Darwinism and
evolution, most famously in the Scopes Trial.
The Case’s Outcome
The case eventually found Scopes guilty, most likely as he incriminated himself, for $100. But Scopes
got what he wanted, and the nation now debated

in schools.
