Base Camp of the Monon

West Virginia is home to the fourth largest national forest in the Northeast – the lush , dense Monongahela National Forest . The Mon Forest , as the locals call it , encompasses over 919,000 acres and has 10 different counties situated within it , including Randolph County , which contains about one-fourth of the forest . Because of this large amount and for many other reasons , the city of Elkins in Randolph County has made a name for itself as the “ Base Camp of the Mon .”
Elkins acts as a launch pad to many outdoor recreation opportunities and is a designated Mon Forest Town . In minutes , you can experience stunning year-round scenery , abundant plant and animal life , country roads , and some of the most iconic natural attractions in West Virginia .
HIKING The Mon Forest s a paradise for nature enthusiasts and includes over 900 miles of hiking trails . Hiking is undoubtedly one of the most popular activities in the area . A well-known hiking destination is the Otter Creek Wilderness Area and is a prime spot for hiking , backpacking , and wildlife viewing . With miles of trails , hikers can spend a whole day exploring this wilderness area . Another iconic destination is Dolly Sods Wilderness offering some of the most spectacular views of the state and has more than 47 miles of trails to choose from . Spruce Knob , the highest point in the state , is a top pick for hikers and backpackers . Be sure to visit Spruce Knob Lake for a picnic and viewing wildlife . In addition , Gaudineer Scenic Area ( pictured ), is a great place to have a picnic and enjoy the fresh mountain breeze .
