From the Start
Although I have been a member of various racing clubs over the past unmentionable number of years, I had never been in a position to consider rehoming a racehorse.
In 2008 Elite Racing Club were asking for homes and, after discussing it with my partner Bryn, I contacted them saying that we could take a mare as we have a small stud and were interested in crossing with our Welsh Cob stallion.
We were offered a mare but as she had a few behavioural problems, which some say can be copied by others, we declined.
We were contacted again in December 2008 and offered a mare which had run in the Axom colours and trained by Julie Camacho called "Lady in Chief".
We agreed to take her and, after an inspection to find if we were suitable, we collected her from Wiltshire and began a very sharp learning curve of having a mare straight out of training ........ the speed she went around the paddock when she was turned out was scary, but we were only used to cobs at a canter so it was a bit of a surprise to put it mildly.
In the Spring we covered her with our old stallion but unfortunately she did not get in foal the first year, but during the year I began looking at her breeding and realising how good it was.
When it was getting closer to the Spring we decided that she might be a mare who has problems getting in foal the first time so we ran her out with a young stallion. She made him wait, but it worked and the result was "Bert".
I knew the breeding I was looking to find for the next year and was lucky to find him only 20 miles away. The rest as they say is history.

Bert
Here is Bert, Maggie's half brother. He is a registered Welsh part-bred born in 2011. The picture shows him at about 8 weeks when Lady was at Grove Court for her first visit to Darnay. He is almost a clone of his mother.
He is being given plenty of time to mature and will probably be broken in the Spring, if the rain ever stops.
