race, it’ s a journey of connection and adventure built around community, so runners often run in pairs for safety and for camaraderie.
Now you’ re planning Escape to Cape Town, which I believe has special significance as your mother was born in Grassy Park. It’ s also going to be your longest ultra relay yet, covering 950km from Gqeberha to Cape Town. Give us more details of what you’ re planning … This one is special for sure. We’ ll be starting on Shark Rock Pier in Gqeberha on Sunday 30 March and running 950km non-stop along South Africa’ s historic Garden Route all the way to Cape Town’ s beautiful Waterfront. This is our longest Escape yet and while the views will be breathtaking, the distance will be daunting. Our band of runners from across the world will be linking up with Cape Town’ s Cool Runnings Recreational Club and the Must Love Hills Run Crew.
A part of this Escape is about giving back, and you’ ve partnered with Run4Schools in Mitchells Plain, both to raise awareness of, and money for their cause. Give us more details about that and the 5km race you’ re planning with local school kids. As I understand it, it’ s all part of runners getting a broader sense of the country and communities they’ re running through? Escape has always been about community and for Escape to Cape Town I wanted to lean into the notion that it’ s not about what we take away from the experience, it’ s about what we leave behind. We partnered with Run4Schools to help raise awareness and funds for the work they do in Mitchells Plain. Run4Schools is an organisation aimed at inspiring young lives to build a better future through movement and after-school programs, and the founder Leslie Pangemanan has built something special that we hope to highlight.
On route to our finish line in Cape Town, we’ ll be turning into Mitchells Plain where we’ ve organised a 5km kids run with over 50 children who we are already training with remotely. The beauty of South Africa has always existed in the people and the layers of resilience and love. The Run4Schools 5km Run is our way of celebrating
