initially prevented the trip from happening. Then COVID-19 disrupted our plans entirely. Later, we booked airfare for a 2023 trip, only to have the October 7 attacks force us to cancel.
Unfortunately, our travel insurance proved ineffective and did not reimburse the loss. More recently, escalating tensions with Iran have created additional uncertainty about future plans for 2027. At some point, we began wondering whether perhaps we were not destined to make that trip.
Other trips required careful attention to international authorization requirements. Last year, when traveling to Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, we had to ensure compliance with ETIAS procedures. Earlier this year, we completed the NZETA process before traveling to New Zealand. We also worried about potential TSA

delays during a government shutdown before a planned trip to Kauai, though fortunately, funding was restored shortly before departure.
Preparation Has Become Essential
Modern travelers benefit greatly from staying informed and preparing carefully before departure. Successful travel today often requires more research, awareness, and flexibility than in previous decades.
Savvy travelers routinely monitor world events, review U. S. State Department advisories, understand destination-specific entry requirements, and remain alert to safety concerns while traveling. Awareness of airline baggage rules, airport security procedures, potential delays, and insurance limitations can help minimize unpleasant surprises along the way.
None of these precautions eliminates the frustrations of modern travel, but they can make trips smoother and more manageable.
Still Worth the Journey
Despite the challenges, travel continues to offer experiences that enrich our lives in ways few other activities can. Travel remains fulfilling, educational, refreshing, and deeply rewarding. The excitement of exploring new places, reconnecting with friends and family, experiencing different cultures, and creating lasting memories still makes the effort worthwhile.
Today’ s travel environment may require greater preparation, modified expectations, and additional patience. Yet for many of us, the joy of discovery and the value of shared experiences continue to outweigh the hassles.
Happy travels!!
