Bay for snorkeling . The walk through a jungle-like forest was gorgeous . Although it was cloudy , the fish were still colorful and beautiful , and when the sun peeked through , the colors were even more vibrant .
Beach walk and dining
We took a 2.25-mile walk from our resort to the Marriott along the beach path , lined with resorts , restaurants , and shops . We ate at the Barefoot Bar at the Hula Grill , which had good food and a perfect location . We tried to see the torch lighting and cliff dive at the Sheraton at Black Rock but just missed it .
Week 2 : Family time
We began the week with a move to Villas South and picking up our daughter Bryn and granddaughter Maisie from the airport . Our first stop was another excellent meal at the Paia Fish Market .
We then visited Ho ’ okipa Beach , known for its many sea turtles . Almost 100 of them were sunning themselves on the beach when we visited .
Beach days
Our daughter loves the beach , so most days were beach days , mainly at our resort . The beach is narrow and a bit steep , with a shallow water reef that offers excellent snorkeling , especially outside the North Villas .
Southwest beaches : The only beach day not at the resort was spent southwest of the island , south of Kihei . We visited Oneuli Beach , a dark gray sand beach not ideal for swimming , and Makena Beach , which had beautiful but challenging swimming conditions due to waves breaking close to shore and rip currents .
Non-beach outings
Our first non-beach outing was another walk to the south side of Black Rock for dinner at the Hula Grill . Dinner was great , though the music was too quiet . We did manage to see the Sheraton ’ s Black Rock torch lighting and cliff dive , a cultural and thrilling experience .
North and east Maui Our next excursion was a drive around the north and east sides of

west Maui to the Iao Valley . Stops included Napili Beach , Dragon ’ s Teeth , Honolua Bay , the Nakelele Blowhole , and the Olivine Pools . The blowhole was fascinating , and the pools , though dangerous , were worth seeing from a safe distance .
Iao Valley
The valley is a sacred place where one of the most significant battles for the unification of the Hawaiian islands took place . The Iao Needle is an interesting monument , and the valley itself is lush and jungle-like , with rugged , craggy mountains .
Haleakala volcano
Our final excursion was to the summit of Haleakala volcano . Below the summit , it was cloudy , but we broke through to perfectly blue skies above the clouds . The view was stunning , with the west Maui mountains poking through the clouds .
Sipping Maui wine
From Haleakala , we drove to Maui Wine , the only winery on Maui . Among their offerings is pineapple
