Week 1 : Road to Hana
This week , it was just Denée , and me . Half the days were spent at the resort , the other half on excursions . Our first excursion was the Road to Hana . Unfortunately , it was cool and cloudy with on-and-off rain .
The twists and turns lived up to their reputation . We saw beautiful vegetation , flowers , waterfalls , beaches , pools , taro fields , and historic sites . Beaches ranged from sandy to rocky , and different colors of sand .
Be aware that Wai ’ anapanapa State Park , home to a black sand beach , requires reservations . banyan tree .
The end of the hike revealed a crescent-shaped cliff with narrow but tall waterfalls , culminating in the impressive Waimoku Falls .
Night driving challenges It turned dark about an hour into our return trip . I do not recommend driving this route in the dark . There are no street lights , and the curves are pitch black . We made it out and stopped at the Paia Fish Market for dinner , a must-visit with great prices for delicious fish and fantastic coleslaw .

Waterfalls and pools
Most waterfalls were roadside or a short hike away . The highest and most difficult to reach waterfall was located in the eastern and coastal part of Haleakala National Park .
Here , we saw the Pools of Oheo , also known as the Seven Sacred Pools , though this is more a marketing label than an accurate name . Waimoku Falls , the highest along the Road to Hana , involved a 2-mile , uphill , very muddy hike , passing smaller falls , a bamboo forest , and a large
