No . 138 The Trusty Servant
Sunday ’ s weather conditions held up for the match racing , which consisted of two round robins between the top four teams . Miles Jones ’ s match racing experience and some great teamwork from the whole crew led to a clean sweep , so we progressed to a best-of-3 final against Charterhouse .
Back L-R : Perdita Light ( St Swithun ’ s ); Gerard Cloke Brown ( B , 14-19 ); Lizzie Frost ( née Anderson ) ( St Swithun ’ s ); James Markby ( C , 93-98 ). Front L-R : Alastair Moye ( Coll , 78-83 ); Miles Jones ( A , 12-17 ); Alastair Morley ( B , 93-98 ); Roderick Walker ( G , 69-73 ); Harley Stone ( C , 15-20 )
OWSC secured the Reggie Bennett Trophy for inter school / OW competition , while ORSA won the overall Doglievsky “ Dog ” Bowl .
Our thanks go to Seaview Yacht Club for hosting , and to Jim Eynon ( H , 94- 99 ) for organising and captaining the WSC team . We were delighted to see Caspar Gray ( B , 16-21 ) following a long tradition of Wykehamist race officers and running an outstanding set of races .
Arrow Trophy WSC Now Seven Times Winners The Arrow Trophy is the principal alumni sailing event . It has run for more than 60 years and in its current format since 1992 . Racing takes place on the Solent in two fleets of matched charter boats . All 22 entrants ( there was a waiting list ) compete in fleet racing on the Saturday , and the four topplaced boats progress to a match racing tournament on Day Two . WSC has a strong record , being a regular finalist and winning the tournament six times out of 26 appearances since 1992 .
A crew of eight OWs , bolstered by a couple of St Swithun ’ s alumnae , took part in the 2024 competition on 5 th & 6 th October .
Four races took place on Saturday in perfect conditions . Miles Jones and James Markby took charge of steering and tactics , with the experienced Alastair Moye on the bow . WSC finished 2nd , 4th , 3rd and 1 st , comfortably securing a place in the top four .
In the final , a convincing win in the first race was followed by a very tight second race , in which Charterhouse ’ s superior speed edged out WSC in the last couple of legs , setting up a tense decider . After a tight battle that had waged all weekend , it came down to the final metres of the last race of the day . Charterhouse held a narrow lead when some inspired helming and a good gybe of the spinnaker enabled WSC to establish the finest of overlaps and inflict a penalty on Charterhouse right at the finish .
This secured the seventh Arrow Trophy win for Winchester and wrapped up a very enjoyable weekend . Congratulations to the team , and thanks to David Anderson ( Coll , 69-74 ) who led the shore crew and secured berthing in the Royal Yacht Squadron haven .
