Christopher McCall ( Coll , 56-61 ) writes :
My late wife and I built in 1998-9 with a well-known architect , John Outram , an unusual house on the Thames near Wallingford . Essentially it was an experiment in building a modern house in the Egyptian revival style ; my wife
was an Egyptologist and I was inevitably infected by her enthusiasm .
In June this year the house was on the application to Historic England of the 20 th Century Society listed II * and it is at present the youngest listed property in the country . Alas my wife died last year , shortly after we sold the house for the purpose of downsizing , and did not live to see this listing . The house ( known as Sphinx Hill ) can be seen on the internet if anyone is interested in what many would regard as a modern folly ; but it has been widely published and as far as I know in universally complimentary terms .

OW Publications Simon Boas ( Coll , 90-95 ) wrote A Beginner ’ s Guide to Dying after being diagnosed with incurable cancer . In A Beginner ’ s Guide to Dying Simon considers the things that have given him such a great sense of peace and contentment , and why dying at 46 really isn ’ t so bad . And for that reason , it ’ s also only partly about ‘ dying ’. It is mostly a hymn to the joy and preciousness of life , and why giving death a place can help all of us make even more of it . 160 pages ; Swift Press ; ISBN 978-1800755031 ( See also Obituary )
