Music
Sarah Baldock ( Director of Music , 22- ) writes :
The past six months have been marked by some illustrious visitors to Winchester for masterclasses and prize competitions , but also pupils travelling beyond Winchester .
During Cloister time , the Chamber Orchestra gave two performances of Vivaldi ’ s Four Seasons with four different pupil soloists in London . The Quiristers sang in the same programme with choristers from St John the Divine Church , Kennington . The Jazz Orchestra gave a concert with musicians at Farleigh School in which some Win Coll Farleigh alumni played next to pupils about to join us – a joyful celebration of our links . A Prep Schools ’ String Day directed by Head of Strings Rafael Bolivar ( CoRo , 23- ) similarly attracted dedicated pupils .
The side-by-side theme continued on a larger scale in the Wykeham Eve concert with the Band of the Royal Marines , Portsmouth . Musicians from local schools and Win : Coll Symphonic Wind Band were directed by Capt Daniel Button RM in a workshop day culminating in an exhilarating joint concert . A quintet and bugler from the Band contributed magnificently to the War Cloister Centenary service the following day .
We bade farewell to two much-loved members of the department , Howard Ionascu and Oli Tarney ( see Valete , below ), both of whom are spending more time pursuing their freelance careers : look out for concerts in your vicinity . Another reminder of our extraordinary teachers was the performance of soprano soloist Claire Rutter in Beethoven ’ s 9th ( Choral ) Symphony : a new Sixth Book singer was astounded to see her teacher centrestage , filling that huge hall with sound , during a music award-holders ’ concert trip to the Royal Albert Hall . New aspirations have been set through all these experiences .
It feels particularly apt in juxtaposition to the tributes ( see pages 14-17 ) to Tony Ayres ( CoRo , 1969-2009 ), musician , and A-house tutor extraordinaire , to give the results of this year ’ s House Singing Competition :
Bobber Pot : Furley ’ s ; Beloe ’ s ; College Schuster Pot : Trant ’ s ; Phil ’ s ; College
Julian Smith Cup for a classical song : Hopper ’ s
Trant ’ s well-deserved Schuster Pot win had an additional angle : the complex and effective arrangement of Bill Withers ’ ‘ Ain ’ t No Sunshine When She ’ s Gone ’ was by current VIBk1 musician Dominik Clarke ( H , 20- ).
Drama
Kevin Fondain-Foglietti ( CoRo , 20- ; Head of Drama , 23- ) writes :
At the beginning of Cloister Time 2024 , the Drama Department initiated an MP Play : Dracula – A Comedy of Terrors . It has become clear that this year group a very talented one , which navigated this physical and pun-ridden farcical adaptation of the Bram Stoker classic with great mastery .
In June , Edward Thomson ( Coll : 20- ) took on the challenge of directing a staged reading of Agamemnon in Flint Court to give our pupils a taste of what the Greek theatre experience was like . A particular highlight of the show was that Alex Winnifrith ( I , 20- ) not only composed music to go with a part of text , but also sang it to try and recreate the sounds heard by Ancient Greeks .
The Junior Drama Festival took place in the last week of Cloister Time . Dancy Pot ( for the best play ) was awarded to Chawker ’ s with Frankenstein , with the second and third positions going to Kenny ’ s and Hopper ’ s respectively . Taylor Cup ( for an outstanding original contribution ) went to College for their colourful adaptation of Alice in Wonderland .
The Drama programme this year opened with the College House Play : The Importance of Being Earnest . Tackling such a classic is not an easy task , and all actors did a great job , leading a laughing audience through a whirlwind of absurd situations , mistaken identities and exaggerated characters . College is of course now the only part of the school obliged to continue the fine old tradition of female impersonation , and it was embraced with flair . Especial mention should go to Arun Sharma ( Coll , 21- ) who not only directed the play , but also cut it skilfully down to a tight 80 minutes , without missing a beat .
Sport
Mark Burley ( Co Ro , 20- ; Director of Sport ) writes :
Henry Nicholls ( A , 19-24 ) led from the front for Lords , amassing 988 runs to help the team to 13 wins in 18 games and another 2 nd place finish in the John Harvey Trophy . His opening partner , Charlie Whitfield ( A , 22-24 ) and Seb Morgan ( D , 20- ) have also passed 500 runs for Lords , with Seb nearing 900 runs overall . Our spin bowlers took the wickets : George Bowder ’ s ( B , 20- ) 36 wickets came for Lords and the U17s ,
