OW Cricket News
The 2023 OWCC season started with a bang , as Michael Truell ( H , 06-11 ) and Richard Johnson ( H , 03- 05 ) ( pictured ) both scored unbeaten centuries in a comprehensive victory against the Earl of Carnarvon ’ s XI on our return to Highclere Castle . It only got better with our second fixture of the year , a great team performance to beat Eton Ramblers on Lords . A metronomic bowling attack led by Henry Adams ( Coll , 13-18 ) ( 4- 21 ) restricted the Old Enemy to 155 which we chased for the loss of only three wickets , anchored superbly by President Bill Holland ( F , 79-83 ) ( 78 *).
Wykeham Day brought two games , the first – against a very strong Lords XI – saw the OWs start well with both the ball and bat but fade twice to succumb to a 100-run defeat . In contrast , the 2 nd XI game was a nailbiter . Arthur Adams ( D , 15-20 ) hit an unbeaten 108 in our total
of 210-8 dec ., which looked to be enough when three wickets apiece from Richard Cubitt ( G , 8-13 ), Paul Edwards ( A , 17-22 ) and Ed Roe ( Coll , 07-12 ) reduced the School to 182-9 . However , the final partnership held their nerve to see the school home and ruin Tim Moore ’ s ( Coll , 93-98 ) hopes of finishing his captaincy of this fixture on a high .
A nine-wicket thrashing at the hands of I Zingari brought us crashing back to earth , before we somehow lost to the Free Foresters in a comically lowscoring game . Cricket Week brought good games against Gemini ( lost ), Hampshire Hogs ( lost ) and Butterflies ( won ) but sadly also a cancelled fixture as Radley Rangers were unable to raise a side .
Military fixtures against the Guards and the Rifles followed , with a defeat in the former , despite an unbeaten ton from Ewan Evans ( I , 12-17 ), and a victory in the latter which included Teddy Ridley ( K , 15-20 ) taking a catch off his father Caspar ’ s ( K , 80-85 ) bowling .
